Location of Siesta Key

Here is a Google overhead map of Siesta Key. The eight mile long island is located just south of Lido Key and north of Casey Key. There are two bridges that connect Siesta Key to the mainland of Sarasota. Access to all of the amenities of Sarasota is easy. It does get a little busier in the winter season when the "snowbirds" are in town. However, the traffic is typically not unbearable.

Feel like eating with friends in downtown Sarasota? It wouldn't take that long to get there from Siesta Key. If you are near the north end of the island you can cross the north bridge into Sarasota and be there within about 10 minutes.

Meeting friends for dinner at St. Armands Circle on Lido Key? There is no bridge from Lido Key to Siesta Key so you have weave your way through Sarasota. Assuming no major traffic jams you can get from Siesta Key to Lido Key in 15 to 20 minutes.

Siesta Key Hotels

You won't find any large resorts on Siesta Key. Most of the lodging on the island consists of short term rental condominiums and quaint beach hotels. If you are looking to stay on Siesta Key try these condos as they allow short term rentals: Palm Bay Club, Siesta Dunes, Sarasota Surf and Racquet and Horizons West. If you want to stay in a hotel on Siesta Key try: Siesta Beach Resort and Suites, Tropical Breeze Resort, Tropical Shores Beach Resort, Hibiscus Suites Inn or Captiva Beach Resort.

Siesta Key History

People began settling on Siesta Key in the late 1800's. Back then the island was referred to as "Sarasota Key." Captain Louis Roberts and his wife, Ocean Hansen Roberts came to Siesta Key and established their claim. Do their names look familiar? Ocean Boulevard, Roberts Road and Hansen Bayou were named after the couple. In 1906, Captain Roberts enlarged his home and turned it into Roberts Hotel. In 1902 Captain Robert, Harry Higel and E.M. Arbogast formed the Siesta Land Company. By 1946, Siesta Key was still labeled “Sarasota Key” on government maps, but was called Siesta Key by the County.

Harry Higel, for who Higel Avenue is named after, was responsible for many of the canals on Siesta Key. In 1910 Higel was busy dredging canals, filling in low lying areas and excavating shell deposits that could be used to surface the roads as they were built. The canal that leads from Hansen Bayou westward was dug for its shell deposits.

In 1916 Harry Higel was mayor of Sarasota and supported a bond issue that was passed and resulted in the building of the first Siesta Key Bridge in 1917. The second bridge on Stickney Point Road was built by the County in 1926. They platted the subdivision of Siesta on the northern end of the Key.

The Siesta Key Association was founded on November 12, 1948, as a community group which was dedicated to maintaining Siesta Key as an attractive residential area. The association has been the driving force behind many improvements to Siesta Key.
