All of the island is located within the boundaries of the Town of Longboat Key, a Florida municipality incorporated in 1955.

According to the most recent U.S. Census Bureau estimates, Longboat Key has a population of roughly 7,400 people as well as about 8,800 housing units. Island residents are made up of mostly 2nd home owners, retirees and working professionals.

Longboat Key attracts vacationers from the state of Florida, nationally as well as internationally. The island is popular to Europeans in both the winter and summer. Vacationers mostly visit Longboat Key to frolic on the beach and in the clear blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Other recreational activities include boating, fishing, enjoying a day at the spa, shopping, parasailing, jetskiing, dining and fine or casual restaurants on St. Armands Circle, playing tennis or golfing. Longboat Key is the only barrier island off the coast of Sarasota that a golf course.

Longboat Key is also conveniently located to Sarasota's culture district. Art lovers will find it easy to enjoy the theater, opera, symphony, ballet, movies or art museums.
