Casey Key, Florida

The picturesque Casey Key is one of Florida's best kept secret gems. It is unadorned by tourists standards, but its the perfect island for those that want to get away from it all. The barrier island also allows the homebuyer to get back to basics and enjoy a touch of Old Florida and the natural beauty many residents within the state have come to love.

Casey Key is a short 8-miles of breathtaking shoreline, white sandy beaches and subtropical properties. The area offers welcomed seclusion from cluttered commercial cities, and it is less than 300 yards at its largest West to East width. At the North end of Casey Key is Sarasota Bay's Siesta Key area. However, Casey Key extends into the Venice Beach area on its South end. The Gulf of Mexico flanks the area on its west side, while Casey Key's East side is covered by Little Sarasota Bay, Dryman Bay and Black Burn Bay. beach2_2304

Casey Key Homes

Casey Key real estate provides a rare opportunity to own a piece of unparalleled Florida property. The area affords the opportunity to live within a spectacularly designed million dollar estate or vacation home that has access to both bay and gulf activities that are just steps away from each other.

These waterfront homes and bay view homes offer spectacular architecture, such as Old Florida, Modern, Key West and Spanish-Mediterranean Villas. Today, the area is home to less than 600 residents, but real estate within the area is extremely limited. For this reason, many have already taken advantage of the stunning homes the area provides, including 3-bedroom homes, 4-bedroom homes, 5-bedroom homes and up.

These compounds and estates are spacious and offer dynamic floor plans and immaculate outdoor designs that often include private boardwalks, on-ground tennis courts, swimming pools. Homebuyers will find compounds with expanded living space that ranges from 1,400 square feet to nearly 14,000 square feet.

Some properties offer serene and lush landscapes with mature foliage, while others may be surrounded by Oak trees with subtropical landscapes or hardscapes. With private beach or bay access, walled and gated single family homes and exquisite living areas, its no wonder that many have already chosen to live the ultimate Casey Key lifestyle.

Casey Key Community

casey_key_288When biking or driving within the community of Casey Key visitors will notice the collection of newer million dollar homes, villas, estates and family vacation homes that peek out from behind the Palm trees, Pine trees and other subtropical foliage that adorns the area. Of course, there are some older beach homes, a few hotels and even fewer non-highrise condos nestled within the area. The community is safe from any mass commercial development, because of the area's restrictive covenants.

Even so, homes within the area are situated on either side of the only passage way within the area, Casey Key Road. Residents and Florida visitors gain driving access to the area via two connecting bridges. The Southern bridge is located at Albee Road West, while the Northern bridge is located at Blackburn Point Road.

Because of the exclusive nature of the beach, there is limited access to public services on the island. Most residents will need to head to Siesta Key or Sarasota, Florida for public services they need.

Yet, residents and visitors often head to Nokomis Beach to take advantage of the public facilities that are available within Casey Key. This long stretch of beach is a hot spot for locals that enjoy sunbathing, walks along the gently sloping barrier, and the charming tiki snack bars just off the white sandy shore. Nokomis beach also offers access to a breathtaking boardwalk and exclusive boat launch area.

History

The first glimpse of the history of Casey Key is the swing bridge at Blackburn Point Road. Although the functioning bridge is obsolete because its rotating capability is not used, this one-lane Gulf Intracoastal passageway is one of the only few pivoting bridges still in use within the United States today. The bridge was built within the early 1920's, and it has been listed under the authority of the United States National Register of Historic Places.

The rich history of this unique and stunning coastline dates back to the 1840's. Unlike the paradise island that it is today, Casey Key was once considered to be one of Florida's wild and uninhabitable areas, until John Casey was commissioned to survey and map out the area. Part of Casey's job was also to remove the Seminole Indians that called the area home. Although John Casey's name appeared on the 1849 map of the area, the map also showed that the area was originally called Chaise's Key.

The Seminole War and Civil War halted any development of the area until the 1920's. Unlike the wild area that was mapped out by John Casey, today Casey Key provides some of the most sought after real estate within the State of Florida and the United States. In fact, the famous writer and director Steven King owns one of many beautiful properties that are often tucked behind ornate wrought iron fences.

Activities and Attractions Near Casey Key

Residents and visitors of Casey Key enjoy watching birds and sea turtles, the mangroves and untamed sea outlets that are located along the beach. However, one of the most inviting areas of Casey Key is North Jetty Park that is located on the area's Southern tip.

The park is an anglers paradise and offers easy access to the Gulf from the Venice Jetty. North Jetty Park offers a refreshing beach outlet, and many locals and visitors are often caught doing nothing more than relaxing under a beach umbrella, building sandcastles or collecting molluskan sea shells. Locals would also confess to making frequent visits to the nearby North Jetty Fish Camp, where they can get cold beer and a hotdogs and pick up some fishing bait. Those that venture out of the nearby Venice Jetty may also catch a glimpse of the friendly and playful dolphins that swim the Gulf.

Other activities and attractions at Casey Key include listening to live music from the Siesta Key Drum Circle, shopping at the charming Venice Beach area or jet skiing at nearby Siesta Beach that is North of Casey Key. The Siesta Key area also provides appealing activities such as parasailing, fishing charters and sighting tours.

Attractions within the area include Siesta Key Kayaking Tours, Sniki Tiki at Captain Curt's Village and the Old Salty Dog Restaurant at Siesta Key Village. Other fascinating areas of Siesta Key include Turtle Beach, Stickney Point Beach and the Point O' Rocks area. These areas offer access to fitness and jogging trails, canoeing, public boat ramps and tennis courts.

Dining

One of the most charming things about Casey Key is its access to unique dining experiences. For instance, locals often plan a day trip through the bay, and head to the Casey Key Fish House by boat or by car. The restaurant is located just off of the Blackburn Bridge. The restaurant features some of the freshest seafood on Sarasota Bay, a 175 foot water dock, and a tiki bar.

The Longboat Key Dry Dock Waterfront Grill is also another favorite among locals and celebrities, and it features casual styled dining with panoramic Sarasota Bay views. Outdoor waterfront and patio seating is provided, and locals often often request their famous Grouper Sandwiches, Stone Crab Claws or Amberjack meals.

Locals and visitors cannot miss the fine dining experience offered at the award winning restaurant Ophelia's on the Bay. This restaurant has been chosen as one of Florida's sought after wedding venues for its spectacular design and views of the mangrove islands. Other famous restaurants in the city of Sarasota, Florida include the upscale Table Creekside waterfront restaurant and the fun and festive Phillippi Creek Village Oyster Bar.

Nearby Sarasota Citydowntownsarasota_640

The vibrant city of Sarasota, Florida is located approximately 12 miles from Casey Key. The area features some of the best Coquina Crab shells and molluskan sea shells on the bay. However, the area is home to exciting events, such as the Sarasota Film Festival, Thunder by the Bay Motorcycle Festival and Circus Sarasota. However, Casey Key homeowners enjoy the area's many local attractions, such as Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, the Aquarium at Mote Marine Laboratory and nearby Anna Maria Island. The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the historical village at Coquina Beach and the Historic Spanish Point are also fabulous area attractions in Sarasota.
