Why I Bought a Downtown Sarasota Condo

I asked a client of mine to write about why he chose to purchase a downtown Sarasota condo. He was nice enough to write the following:

Downtown Sarasota: Sophisticated, Urban and Manageable

On June 30, we closed on our new home in downtown Sarasota. It was the culmination of a four-year process that took us to three continents in search of a new place to live.

New York City had been our home for more than 30 years. We loved the theater, the dance, the music, the museums and the art, the access to some of the worlds best shopping and restaurants. Those are the positives, but there were negatives, too: the congestion, the prices, the subways at rush hour, and the general pace of things.

We made a list of cities we might consider Paris; Palm Springs; Santa Fe; Sydney; Saratoga, New York and Vancouver - and we travelled to each of them at least once to check them out. We were looking for a manageable, sophisticated urban environment, a reasonable cost of living, and an active arts scene Each had a lot to offer, but none of them captured both of our fancies or imaginations.

Enter Sarasota.

Last February my partner was visiting his elderly mother in the Tampa area and decided to take her on an outing. They ended up in Sarasota. He called to say he was at Lido Beach, and he had never seen a beach so perfect anywhere in the world. He gushed about the sand, the breeze and how perfect the water looked.

A couple of hours later he called again, this time to rave about the downtown area. “Its a real downtown with a real Main Street, and there is a restaurant for almost any taste: tapas, seafood, Italian, a steak house, Peruvian, Belgian, French, and a very cool club. Not only that, but Patty LuPone just played here, Itzak Perlman was playing tonight, and the Joffrey was coming in for a run.”

He had my attention, and we both scheduled a trip down to take a close look. We called a realtor to show us around. (We called three actually. We explained we would fly down from New York City for a couple of days, and two of the realtors said they could spare an hour or so for us.) We found the third realtor online, and we contacted him. In less than an hour, Marc Rasmussen got back to us with pertinent questions about what we wanted and said he would be happy to spend all the time we needed when we visited.

Sure enough, we came back down to Sarasota. Marc picked us up at our hotel and showed us a variety of properties in different locations and at different price points to give a feel for the market. Over the next few months, we worked closely with him through numerous emails, text messages, phone calls and visits.

He always had time for us, always got back to us with helpful and incisive information, and always retained his Rock of Gibraltor calm throughout the emotional roller coaster ride of selecting, negotiating for and closing on a new home. He even recommended a terrific attorney, Anne Weintraub, and an insurance agent, Robert Ludwig.

Weve been in downtown Sarasota for seven weeks now, and there is no buyers remorse. Three or four days go by at a time when we dont drive our car; we walk to a different restaurant several evenings a week; we just saw a play, “Sylvia,” that we missed in New York a few years ago; we have our tickets for a Diana Kral concert in the fall; and we are choosing among a number of other musicals, dance performances and opera.

In other words, its everything we wanted. A small, manageable urban environment with sophistication that rivals just about anyplace else.

Alan Dee

Below are some photos of the unit they purchased in 1350 Main.

Five Downtown Sarasota Condos with Great Views

Yearning for a more metropolitan lifestyle without many of the hassles of a large city. Downtown Sarasota is a great place to live if you want to be within walking distance to the Sarasota bayfront, Marina Jacks, numerous restaurants, art galleries, cozy retail stores, Florida Studio Theatre, Van Wezel Performing Arts Center, Sarasota Opera and several other cultural venues.

One of the benefits of living in downtown Sarasota are fabulous views of downtown, Marina Jacks, Sarasota bay and the barrier islands like Siesta Key, Bird Key, Lido Key and Longboat Key. There are several places in the downtown area that offer a fabulous view. Here are five of them:

888 and 988

If water views are what you are after then take a look at the Condo on the Bay community. Most people in Sarasota know them as 888 and 988 condos. These condos offer spectacular water, Bird Key, Lido Key and Longboat Key views. If you get high enough in the buildings you will see the Gulf of Mexico and have magnificent sunsets. Condo on the Bay was developed in 1982. There are 272 condos that face west. Amenities include tennis courts, swimming pool, security, manned guard gate and exercise facilities. Prices currently range from $429,900 to $795,000

1350 Main

1350 Main Sarasota condos are great if you want to be within footsteps of all of the amenities of downtown Sarasota. If you get high enough in the building there are some great views. I recently sold unit 1302 that faced north/north west. It had some amazing water and city views. The condo units in 1350 Main that face due west also have great views of the Sarasota bay, Bird Key, Siesta Key and Big Pass. Prices currently range from $325,000 to $1,850,000.

Beau Ciel

Beau Ciel Sarasota is one of the nicest newer condos in downtown Sarasota. This 44 unit building was developed in 2003 and is located right next to the Hyatt hotel. The views here are spectacular. Looking to the west and you will see the Sarasota bay and Longboat Key. To the south and east and you have great views of the Ritz Carlton, boat basin and downtown Sarasota skyline. Prices currently range from $749,000 to $7,700,000.

La Bellasara

La Bellasara is located on Golden Gate Point. This 28 unit magnificent Italian styles condo development was built in 2006. It offers really nice views of Marina Jacks, Sarasota bay and the downtown Sarasota skyline. These condos are very spacious with square footages ranging from 3,135 and going up to 6,867. The terraces are expansive offering residents delightful outdoor living. Currently prices range from $2,400,000 to $6,850,000.

Bay Plaza

Bay Plaza not only offers great water and marina views but residents also have easy access to all of the amenities that downtown has to offer. This 1982 built condo has 102 units and offers magnificent amenities. There is a 24 hour, 7 day a week valet service for residents. Prices currently range from $529,900 to $635,000.

My buyers (they were ok with me blogging about it) purchased this stunning condo in 1350 Main today. The asking price was $595,000 and it closed for $550,000. This unit has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 1,336 square feet with fabulous views overlooking downtown and the Sarasota bay.

as you celebrate the start of an exciting evening in downtown Sarasota. As the
final light of day fades to black, your view turns into a necklace of sparkling
diamonds that surround the Bay. Perhaps a brilliant moon will put a spotlight
on your evening activities, as you walk to your favorite restaurant and perhaps
a theatre or opera performance. No, you are not dreaming! You are actually
living the dream of residing at 1350 Main, which is so intimate in design that

the Bay of Sarasota punctuated by iconic architecture. Your residence has many
upgrades, such as hardwood floors, granite, stainless steel appliances, European

terrace, swimming pool, spa, outdoor granite and stainless steel grill &
teak lounges. The club rooms, big screen lounge, private dining/meeting room,
catering kitchen, guest suite, fitness center plus steam rooms make 1350 Main
very special. Having residential hi-speed internet included in the building
maintenance fee is an added bonus.
